Are certain mattresses better for overweight sleepers? ... YES
Obviously, the number one goal when choosing a mattress is buying one that is comfortable for you, but the other important considerations are how long it will last? Is it supporting you correctly? Is the mattress going to be too hot? Can all of these things be achieved?
The answer is yes, all of these goals can be achieved through many different types of mattresses. For durability, we would recommend a turnable mattress, this would guarantee even wear throughout the mattress and extend the longevity as well. Most turnable mattresses have more traditional upholstery within them, and therefore will be cooler.
If you are opting for a luxury mattress, you may want to consider a hand side stitched option. It provides more support to the edge of the mattress and helps to maintain its shape longer. The craftsmen tie the outer mattress material to the inner mechanism, making it much more durable.
Since this job requires a high skill level and a formidable amount of time, the cost of such mattresses may be higher than other models.
A rod edge mattress reinforces the edge of the mattress and also helps to frame the spring unit, keeping the springs in place and extending the longevity of the mattress. The majority of mattresses are built this way. If you are overweight, you may want to consider a mattress with a thicker rod used for the edge, and possibly a thicker gauge wire used for the springs themselves, as this would give a more supportive feel.
However, turnable mattresses are not the only way to achieve these goals.
Foam encapsulated mattresses are single sided mattresses that reduce the risk of sagging and aid to eliminate the “roll off” feel. Foam encapsulated mattresses also provide a firm and supportive feel when sitting on the edge of the mattress.
Latex Mattresses were brought in for the support and durability rather than a ‘Memory Foam’ mattress. ‘Memory Foam’ we feel is not as durable and there have been many reports of ‘Memory Foam’ being rather hot during the night and can cause heat issues. Latex is a cooler product and designed not to heat up during the night.
If heat is an issue for you during the night, there is nothing cooler than natural fillings such as wool, cotton, cashmere, silk and traditional fillings.
For finding the best mattresses suited for you, we do strongly recommend coming into the store and after a conversation with one of our bed geeks, trying the mattresses out for yourself will put you on the right path.
